Fishing at tolaga bay wharf
The sun was slowly setting, making the area around us dark, we casted our lines, and chatted about games.
We had barely any bait, only left over patties from our last meal. I looked at the waves crashing into the barnacles on the posts of the wharf. There were around 8 people fishing in the whole camp group, 3 rods and 5 hand lines.
I had no hope at all, the last 20 or so lines I only lost more bait for the group. One of my friends Krystan, got bored and decided to try out the rod because he was using the hand line.
He did a very far cast, around 25 long meters, I decided to talk to Krystan as I was inhaling the rotting fish and salt air that was climbing because it was bashing against the posts.
Straight away after he casted, the line was slightly shaking. I saw it and he didn't so I informed him that it was shaking. He started furiously reeling the line in. When the line was coming towards the surface, he saw a white splash of struggle piercing out of the water. My heart stopped. I thought to myself “ could this really be the first fish we had caught in the whole Tolaga Bay trip?”
Soon after it was a small little fish with gray scales and a tiny mouth, we decided to invest and make it into more bait. We chopped it up and I saw one of my friends by the name of Tevita getting a knife and stabbing the fish eye while it was still alive, I knew it was cruel but I was so happy that we got a fish that I forgot to tell him that he shouldn't do it.
We went for round 2 of the fishing investment, Krystan kind of seemed like good luck so we let him cast the rod. He did a gigantic throw, probably around 30 meters. I knew we would catch another fish because it was getting dark and nocturnal fish would come out.
After around 20 minutes later I caught nothing, the whole group had no luck left, all of a sudden the line started to go absolutely crazy, we were about to go but we just saw it, my friend Harley grabbed the line and reeled in probably like he never did before, once again I saw white splashes coming out of the ocean, we first thought it was a fish but then we got it onto the deck and we found out it was an eel, we had no idea what type but to celebrate we went back to camp and where thinking of eating it, because I just said “I have ate an eel before”.
Everyone who was fishing went back to camp because it was like 9pm and we showed everyone but then learnt it was endangered, so we put it back in the ocean half dead.
